Marita Mathijsen called him a"inspired scoundrel\\\" in her recently published biography. Jacob van Lenneps Leven (1802-1868) spanned the first half of the 19th century. On this tour, she takes us through its wildly active life, when Amsterdam has just caught its breath from the turbulent patriotic and French times and the first modernizations are already announcing.
Amsterdam was still very well organized when Jacob van Lennep took his first steps. The city was on the north side of the sea and was further surrounded by high ramparts on which mills stood. Jacob van Lennep's life mainly took place within the canal belt and the old city centre. His whole family – grandfathers, grandmothers, great-grandfathers, aunts and uncles – lived near him. Just like his publishers and his acquaintances from the world of writing, politics and art. Whoever he visited, whether he went to the theater or to the club, he covered almost everything on foot. We can follow his footsteps through the city he loved and described with so much love. Van Lennep knew Amsterdam exceptionally well. For example, he knew the different dialects: the inhabitants of the Haarlemmerstraat spoke a different Amsterdam language than those on Kattenburg. He liked to mock the bizarre numbering of the houses in the 19th century. In one of his stories, for example, he shows a Belgian desperately searching for 'Keizersgracht W 424'. The man walks up and down the long canal for hours, until a coachman helps him out. You don't have to worry about that in this walk.
