Oude Lutherse Kerk (Jacob van Lennep wandeling)

Later in life, Jacob van Lennep often visited the Old Lutheran Church on the corner of Singel with Spui, when the church was already in use as the auditorium of the university, then the Athenaeum Illustre. In 1832 he was tasked with organizing the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of Amsterdam's most important educational institution. A play by him was played, Een Amsterdamsche winteravond, about the foundation of the Athenaeum. He not only introduced Vondel, but also a shrunken Amsterdam merchant who thinks setting up a university is a waste of money. A riot broke out. Traders whistled the piece, but the students stood up for Van Lennep. Source: Marita Mathijsen, 'Deftige circles. Walk through the Amsterdam of Jacob van Lennep '.
