Munttoren
The Munttoren in Amsterdam used to be part of the Regulierspoort city gate. This was one of the three main gates of the medieval fortifications surrounding the city. (Jacob van Lennep walking route) In Van Lennep's time there was a hall against the Munttoren where the distinguished Societeit de Munt met. An exclusive gentlemen's club, where he was accepted as a member in 1828. He never felt quite at home there, because all the older gentlemen continued to treat him like a junior, even when he was already a well-known writer. He finally joined a more ordinary society: Concordia, which was given a new building in 1859 at Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 345. Source: Marita Mathijsen,'Deftige kringen.
