Keizersgracht 555 (Jacob van Lennep wandelroute)
Beyond Vijzelstraat, Jacob's primary school stood on the corner of Keizersgracht and Nieuwe Spiegelstraat. The building was replaced in 1917 by the Amsterdam Society of Life Insurance, Keizersgracht 555. The address of the school (553) no longer exists. The supermaster of the Special School of the Second Class was J. Deeleman. An inspector wrote in 1810: "The textbooks used there are very good and the order and education very judicious, so that this school may rightly be put under the good." Master Deeleman taught the children many facts. They also had to memorize Jean de la Fontaine's fables. Van Lennep could still cancel them when he was elderly.
