World Heritage in Mechelen
On this route you almost trip over the sights, there is so much to see along the way. The Schepenhuis is the starting point of your walk. The aldermen's bench held its meetings in this building in the Middle Ages. You then walk past four fountains with fish heads, the Vismarkt and Huis De Sterre. About halfway through your walk you will pass the Groot Begijnhof Mechelen, the showpiece of the city. The authentic houses in the Begijnhof that used to be inhabited by the Beguines are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. So be sure to take some time to look around here. You will also find the Beguinage Church here.
A historic brewery
A little further on is Brouwerij het Anker, one of the oldest breweries in Belgium. Have a look around here and taste one of the dozens of beers that are brewed here. The brewery has been around since 1471 and Emperor Karel, among others, was a lover of one of the brewery's beers.
Palaces, museums and other beautiful places
Then it's time to continue walking along the Municipal Museum Hof Van Busleyden, the Palace Margareta of Austria, The Botanical Garden and other beautiful places. The palace was the first Renaissance building in the Low Countries. Eventually you will return to the point where you started your walk.
