The four fountains with fish heads on this spot indicate where the fish market was held from the thirteenth century to about 1530. That was not entirely to the liking of Margaret of Austria. She thought the fish market smelled too bad and therefore asked to relocate the market. However, her wish would not be fulfilled until just after her death in 1530. From then on, the fishmongers had to set up their stalls on the Fish Market.
