Fortified city

Mechelen

Mechelen can look back on a glorious past. In the sixteenth century it was the political and cultural capital of the Netherlands and from 1559 it became an archiepiscopal city. This has translated into a beautiful city full of historical monuments. In Mechelen you can admire more than 300 protected monuments and four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The St. Rumbold's Tower is the absolute eye-catcher of the city, but also the palace of Margaret of Austria, the eight historic churches in the city center, the Kazerne Dossin and the centuries-old brewery Het Anker, where delicious beers are still brewed.
