Park and garden
De Kruidtuin
The Botanical Garden is the largest public park in the historic city center. This green oasis has a rich cultural history. The Botanical Garden evolved from a medieval garden to a French formal garden and finally to a park in English landscape style. In the middle of the green oasis is the statue of the famous scientist Rembert Dodoens. In the sixteenth century he wrote the Cruyde Book, an important work on medicinal plants and herbs. Be sure to walk along the Dodoenstuin, part of the Botanical Garden. It was redesigned in 2010 according to a sketch of hops from Dodoen's Cruyde book. In the design of the garden, the benches and planters you can recognize the typical shape of hop cones, the meandering tendrils and the hop leaf.
