Description
On the edge of the IJsselmeer in Friesland you will find the historic city of Lemmer. From the 16th century, this city was an important port due to its favorable location on the former Zuiderzee. In the 18th century Lemmer was even the most important port of Friesland after Harlingen. Take a city walk through Lemmer and discover the remains of this heyday.
Stroll through historic streets
The starting point of this route is in the middle of Lemmer. From here you walk to the Zeedijk and then you continue to the Schans. Take the time to take a good look around the Schans, which was built as a sea wall and fortification. You will find special historic houses with surprisingly beautiful facades here. You then continue through narrow, historic streets such as Oudesluis to the Lemstersluis. This lock from 1888 was a sea lock until the construction of the Afsluitdijk. On the edge of the IJsselmeer you can take a look at the Lemmer lighthouse.

In the second part of the route you also walk through cozy streets full of history and you take a look at the Ir DF Woudagemaal. This is the only steam-powered pumping station in the world and it is also the largest steam pumping station ever built. It is therefore not surprising that this pumping station is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
