Description
History
The history of Hoek van Holland begins with the excavation of the Nieuwe Waterweg in 1864. Because Rijkswaterstaat workers and staff settled around the excavation work, a settlement gradually emerged. Initially Hoek van Holland was part of the municipality's-Gravenzande. In 1914 the village is added to Rotterdam; Hoek van Holland therefore gets the first street names.
Due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Nieuwe Waterweg, Hoek van Holland has had a fascinating history in its relatively short existence. The buildings suffered greatly from the German occupation, especially from the bombardment in May 1940. As a result, the'Old Corner\\\' in particular was largely demolished by the occupiers; the Germans built bunkers here and wanted a free field of fire. Fortunately, there are still plenty of historical places to visit that show the history of Hoek van Holland.
