Semafoor (Verkeerscentrale Hoek van Holland – VCH)

In the Second World War, a concrete bunker was built at the beginning of the Noorderpier, just behind the original semaphore. After the war, this unfinished bunker was made usable. In 1947 the Pilotage moved here. The Coastguard was located at the top of the building and monitored shipping 24 hours a day. When distress signals from the sea were received, messages were immediately sent to the Lifeboat, the Pilot Commissioner and Scheveningen Radio. On November 30, 1956, Prince Bernhard put the shore radar system into use in the semaphore. For this purpose, a number of radar observers with their equipment were also housed in the building. This system, to guide and monitor shipping traffic, has been perfected over the years and the observation is now divided into five sectors: Maas Approach (Maas Approach), Pilot Maas, Maas Entrance (Maasmond), Europoort and Rozenburg. You can take a right to the Noorderpier and the Atlantikwall Museum.
