Description

Get to know the center of Mechelen with a nice walking tour and enjoy surprising tastings of Belgian beers and matching snacks along the way. That sounds good, right? This route takes you along beautiful places that played a role in the beer history of Mechelen, but also past other sights and cozy places to settle down.

Ancient monuments
On the first part of the route you will pass sights that date back to times long gone. You will pass the Vismarkt, where fresh fish used to be available. Now it is a popular entertainment area for the people of Mechelen. Settle down here on a terrace to take a break with a regional beer and something delicious. A little further on you will pass Huis De Sterre, which was used as a guild house by the brewers of Mechelen from 1485. Afterwards you can take a look at The dancing statues of Mariette Teugels and the Beguinage Church, among others.

Women as beer brewers
Near the Begijnhofkerk you will find the Groot Begijnhof where many single women used to live who devoted their lives to religion. These women were responsible for brewing beer at the time. That is no exception in history. In the Middle Ages, brewing beer was even one of women's household chores.

The most photogenic spot in Mechelen
You then continue walking along Het Groene Waterke, one of the most photogenic places in Mechelen. You will also pass the Municipal Museum Hof Van Busleyden and the Palace of Margaret of Austria. At the end of the route you will arrive at the Sint-Romboutskerkhof with the monument of the Mechelen Boerenwarriors. This monument consists of an ancient grave with the remains of 41 peasant warriors. These warriors were shot in 1798 by the French occupiers. They were then buried in the mass grave you will find here.
