Sint-Romboutskerkhof: monument Mechelse Boerenkrijgers

On October 23, 1798, 41 people, both peasant warriors and civilians, were executed at the foot of the St. Rumbold's Tower. This put an end to the Mechelen uprising against French rule, which had lasted only two days. The immediate cause for this was the compulsory conscription of young men into the French army. The day before, the peasant warriors had entered the city via Muizen and Hever.
