Cycling along historic waterways

This cycling route introduces you to the historic waterways, old Dutch towns and the polder landscape of the Krimpenerwaard. You will also discover part of the Old Dutch Waterline, the old defense line that was flooded in earlier times to protect Holland against the enemy. The route starts in Gouda and takes you along the Hollandsche IJssel and the Lek to the towns of Nieuwpoort and Schoonhoven.

You cycle back to Gouda via the Vlist and Haastrecht. In this booklet you will find an overview map of the route with detailed directions. Some tips have been added to the route description and at the back of this booklet that may be useful to you while cycling.

Starting point

This route starts from the NS station in Gouda. If you come by car, you can park at the station, but you can also pick up the route from one of the parking lots indicated on the map.

Ferries

If you follow the main route, you cross the Lek twice with a ferry. You can also choose to follow the shortened version, then you avoid the ferries.
