Aarschot, Molenheide and the Demer valley

Today you'll ride to the Belgian town of Aarschot, a true discovery. Art and culture have been close to Aarschot's heart since time immemorial: the many statues and monuments have earned Aarschot the nickname "City of Images." In the city, you'll also pass the Beguinage, founded in 1259. Near Aarschot, you'll also discover the Demer Valley. Like a blue-green ribbon, this valley winds through the Kempen landscape. Blue because of the water—the valley plays an important role in water storage and drainage—and green because you'll find unique natural values here. With its unique landscapes and natural beauty, the valley offers a beautiful setting for your bike ride.

The valley's residents have learned firsthand that the Demer River is not easily controlled. The 1998 floods were not so long ago. This awakened policymakers and led to the need for a different approach to water management. A river is like a lifeline. With initiatives like reopening the Demer through Diest and restoring the Laak River through Aarschot, they aim to revitalize both the river and the city.

The Demer Valley borders another beautiful nature reserve: Molenheide. A small-scale parkland of oak and birch groves intersperses with open heathlands, meadows, fields, and fens. Many rare animal species have made their home here, and butterflies such as the silver-studded blue, the purple-winged butterfly, and the small pearl-bordered fritillary are increasingly spreading. Hares and deer are now permanent residents thanks to the abundant herbaceous vegetation, and sparrowhawks and owls find it a rich hunting ground.

The name of the heathland was certainly not chosen by chance: since 1662, the Heimolen mill has dominated the landscape of Den Oude Stok. After the last miller finally furled the sails of the Heimolen in 1958, it fell into disrepair. Following extensive restoration, the mill was operational again in 1999. Fun fact: a member of the last milling family, Jef Van Aelst, has trained several millers here since then.
