Boerderij De Elza Hoeve

In the Golden Age, Leiden was the largest city in the Republic after Amsterdam. Before the Spanish siege of 1574, the city still had 15,000 inhabitants, a century later there were already more than 60,000. In order to provide all these Leiden residents with dairy and food, a large number of livestock farms arose around the city. For example, Zoeterwoude had about sixty cheese farmers in that period. Now there are still nine. With the Elza Hoeve we fall under Leiden and we are the last dairy farm of this municipality!
