Description

This route is one of the 42 stages of the Jacob van Lennep experience tour. A tour that was inspired by the tour that Van Lennep made in 1823 with his fellow student Van Hogendorp through the Netherlands. Click here for an overview of all stages.

Travel money
Wednesday, May 28, 1823. Jacob van Lennep walks through Amsterdam in the morning to the Rondeel, the current Hotel de l'Europe. Here he greets his traveling companion Dirk van Hogendorp. Where young men from the highest circles made a Grand Tour to Italy at the time, Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp go on an 'inspection' through the Netherlands. Their travel money: 500 guilders per person (converted to about 5000 euros). Donated by their fathers.

Shady neighborhood
At the IJ the young men get into a boat that takes them to Buiksloot. They watch in awe as hundreds of workers are busy constructing the North Holland Canal: a connection that is dug by hand. On the current Buiksloterdijk, there are still a few houses from that time on the right.
In Zaandam they visit the Czar Peter House. They continue by boat on the Zaan. According to Van Lennep to avoid a shady neighborhood."However, no criminals lived here, only Catholics\\\", says Geert Mak in the second TV episode. From the water, the travelers have a beautiful view of the Zaanse Schans. Where there are now a few windmills, there used to be hundreds: it was a true industrial area.

Shoemaker
Because Van Lennep's feet hurt after just one day, he visits a shoemaker in Purmerend to replace his new footwear with high peasant shoes. The craftsman refers him to a colleague who sends him to a third shoemaker. Van Lennep is surprised by this: "How few craftsmen (...) in larger places would send a stranger to one of their colleagues?"

The crossing across the IJ is free, check this link for sailing times.
