The IJ is a former offshoot of the Zuiderzee. In the course of the late Middle Ages, the sea arm became increasingly reclaimed. In 1823 Van Lennep did not yet see the harbors west of the Noordhollandsch Kanaal during his trip across the IJ. This area was not reclaimed until 1848 under the name Buiksloterham. Ferry connections across the IJ are free.
