A stronghold in the Amsterdam city wall once stood on the site of the current Hotel de l 'Europe. This stronghold was demolished in the seventeenth century and replaced by Het Rondeel inn. At this location Jacob van Lennep picked up his traveling companion Dirk van Hogendorp for the famous "Summer of 1823". The inn was demolished in 1895, the newly built Hotel de l'Europe was opened in 1897.
