Nieuwe Stadsherberg

The Nieuwe Stadsherberg was located in 1823 on the spot where the Central Station now stands. This inn was located just outside the entrance gates of the city and was intended to accommodate latecomers. The location on the IJ was not without danger: it can be read in the Amsterdam Municipal Archives that customers sometimes drowned. In 1872 the inn had to make way for Central Station.
