Description
On the third stage of the Zuiderzee route you cycle across the border from Friesland to Overijssel. Part of the route takes you along the edge of the IJsselmeer and further you set course along'new land\\\' that was reclaimed from the Zuiderzee.
Sightseeing along the water
Start your day with a cup of coffee at Hotel Gaasterland and then get on your bike towards the IJsselmeer. The first part of the route takes you through small Frisian towns a stone's throw from the lake, such as Oudemirdum. You will also pass the Mirnser Klif and the Oudemirdumer Klif along the way. At the last cliff you will find a viewpoint with a beautiful view over the IJsselmeer. Take the time to enjoy this for a while. A little further on you can take a look at the Ir DF Woudagemaal, a historic steam pumping station that is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and the associated visitor center.
National Park Weerribben-Wieden
You then cycle straight through the polders to the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, the largest low-lying peat bog in Western Europe. Relax in this area full of vast reed beds, ponds, ditches and swamp forests. Finally you arrive at Hotel Zwartewater in Zwartsluis. Have a nice end to your day here.
Windmill De Foeke
In the reed land on the edge of the Wieden nature reserve you will find the small windmill De Foeke. There used to be such windmills all over this region to drain peat areas. In this way, the peat that was drying in the peat bogs remained dry. From the beginning of the 20th century, peat was no longer extracted, which is why the tjasker mills also disappeared from the landscape.
