The name Fietserspad might remind you a bit of the Pieterpad and that is exactly the intention. The
Fietserspad runs approximately the same as the
Pieterpad , but then on roads where you are allowed to cycle instead of just walk. This way you can enjoy the Pieterpad, the most famous long-distance walk in the Netherlands, but then by bike. This part of the Fietserspad takes you along stages 7, 8 and 9 of the Pieterpad.
Get on your bike in Sleen
The starting point of this route is at Bed & Breakfast 1874 in the esdorp Erm. This village is located on the edge of the Drentse plateau, between two stream valleys. From here you cycle through the nature reserve Ermerzand with a recreational lake. The area is approximately 80 hectares, half of which consists of water. Cycle along the edge of the water here and enjoy the beautiful view.
Fortified town of Coevorden
From here you cycle further to Dalerveen, Dalen and to Coevorden. Fortified city Coevorden is the oldest city in all of Drenthe. Around the year 1600 it was a prosperous trading city, but from the 19th century Coevorden became less and less important. Nowadays you can take a look in the municipal museum of Coevorden to get an idea of what the city looked like in the past.
The rich history of Ommen
Then you cycle on to the towns of Hardenberg and Ommen in Overijssel. The ancient city of Ommen is the end point of this route. This city originated at a ford in the river Vecht. Ommen was granted city rights in 1248. In the city centre you will find all kinds of historical buildings that are reminiscent of Ommen's rich history. For example, take a look at the bell house at the Brigittakerk from 1624 or the former town hall from 1827.
