The name Fietserspad may remind you a bit of the Pieterpad and that is exactly the intention. The
Fietserspad runs approximately the same as the
Pieterpad , but on roads on which you can cycle instead of just walk. This way you can enjoy the Pieterpad, the most famous long-distance walk in the Netherlands, but by bike. This part of the Cyclists' Path takes you along stages 7, 8 and 9 of the Pieterpad.
Get on your bike in Sleen
The starting point of this route is at Bed & Breakfast 1874 in the esdorp Erm. This village is located on the edge of the Drenthe plateau, between two stream valleys. From here you cycle through the Ermerzand nature reserve with a recreational lake. The area is approximately 80 hectares, half of which consists of water. Cycle along the edge of the water here and enjoy the beautiful view.
Fortress town of Coevorden
From here you cycle further to Dalerveen, Dalen and Coevorden. The fortified town of Coevorden is the oldest town in all of Drenthe. Around the year 1600 it was a prosperous trading town, but from the 19th century Coevorden became less and less important. Nowadays you can take a look at the municipal museum of Coevorden to get an idea of what the city used to look like.
The rich history of Ommen
You then cycle further to the towns of Hardenberg and Ommen in Overijssel. The ancient city of Ommen is the end point of this route. This city originated at a ford in the river Vecht. In 1248 Ommen received city rights. In the center of the city you will find all kinds of historic buildings that remind of Ommen's rich history. For example, take a look at the clock house at the Brigitta Church from 1624 or the former town hall from 1827.
