Verzetsmonument Stegeren

In the town of Stegeren you will find a resistance monument in the shape of a boulder. The monument was placed here to remind the inhabitants of Stegeren of the Vroomhoop resistance group Salland. This resistance group started using a drop field near the village from August 1944. During the war years about fourteen drops took place on this field, each time dropping 15 to 28 containers with goods and weapons. These goods were transported by bicycle, by ship or by horse and carriage to addresses in Twente, Deventer, Dedemsvaart and even far north. The weapons and ammunition were hidden in all kinds of inventive ways in pulpits, haystacks, church towers, potato pits and many more places. Furthermore, nine secret agents were also dropped here and were taken from here to safe places. The resistance fighters themselves hid in a shelter and were never discovered.
