The vast peat meadows of the Zaan region

This walking route takes you through Westzaan, a picturesque linear village. Here you will see centuries-old farmhouses and wooden houses. You will also pass the Noordervermaning, a former Mennonite church dating from 1695. Slightly further north, you will pass the Town Hall from 1783 and the Great Church from 1741. It is no wonder that this area enjoys protected village status. Between the buildings, you look out over the peat meadow area with its elongated meadows and ditches. Just outside the village, you pass the seventeenth-century Schoolmeester, the last paper mill in the world that operates on wind power. Next, you walk along the edge of the peat meadows. It is wonderfully quiet here, unless the wind is having a bad day. At the end of the route, you can enjoy a delicious meal at Jongwijs Westzaan - Restaurant & Boutique Hotel.
