Harbor route through the watercourse forest

Experiment with water
This entire route takes you through the Waterloopbos. This forest area is located between the villages of Vollenhove and Kraggenburg on the edge of the Noordoostpolder. From the early fifties of the last century, all kinds of models have been built here and tested by the Waterloopkundig Laboratorium. This ultimately led to the construction of ports, among other things. Visitor center Het Waterloopbos forms the base of this walk. From here you follow the white arrows that mark this route. The first sight you will encounter is the Roman weir. Weirs of this kind were formerly widely used in the Dutch East Indies to supply the rice fields with water.

Ports in miniature
A little further you can take a look at the port of Libya. This model was used for experiments when the Marsha-el-Brega oil port in Libya had to be expanded. You will also find all kinds of models for the port of Rotterdam in the forest, such as the Willemstunnel and the Maasvlakte. Finally, you will pass the Deltawerk artwork and eventually end up at the visitor center again.

A green monument
The Kunstwerk Deltawerk// in the last part of the route is worth an extensive look. This was once a hydraulic model, but nothing is done with it anymore. Over time, the long concrete colossus will become increasingly overgrown with plants and form a green monument.
