This route takes you through the area around Lier, a town on the edge of the Kempen. You will not find a university or an impressive cathedral here, but you will find cobblestone streets, squares and pleasant shopping streets. The attractive center has given Lier the warm nickname 'Lierke Plezierke'.
Discover beautiful Lier
The starting point of this route is at the Lier town hall. The Grote Markt where this town hall is located, but also the Beguinage and the Zimmerplein in Lier seem to come straight from a picture card. The old fortresses embrace the center and on sunny days you can stroll here. Fancy a culinary treat? Then go for a cup of locally roasted coffee accompanied by a Liers Vlaaike. You simply cannot miss that. From Lier you can easily cycle into the Nete Valley. The city is located at the confluence of the Grote and Kleine Nete.
Pallietering along the water
Cycle for miles on the car-free towpaths along the meandering Nete and be taken to Gestel and Nijlen, among others. The Nete is lined with pink-red giant balsam trees and you will also be introduced to the harmonious architecture of a Palladian villa and old mansions. Of course you will also pass some attractive cafés, where you can put the local verb"pallieteren\\\" (enjoy life) into practice.
Numerous sights
Along the way you can enjoy the beautiful Gestel with its protected village view. Here you will find the St. Lambertus Church and two castles. If you want something completely different, visit the Paardenmelkerij Lier. In this farm you can taste horse milk and give your health a boost. Furthermore, at the end of the route you pass the St. Gummarus Church. This church is a beautiful example of Brabant High Gothic.
