Description
Castle splendor in the green
The starting point of this route is on the outskirts of Bruges. From here, you cycle into the forests of Sint-Andries, Sint-Michiels, Zedelgem, and Jabbeke. These forests form the largest green lung around Bruges, and they're not called "castle forests" for nothing. Amidst the greenery, you'll find one castle after another. Nieuwburgh Castle is the first castle you'll visit on the route. This castle originated from a dairy that was established here in 1892. Next, you cycle past Loppem Castle with its surrounding Castle Park and Loppem Maze, and the Priory of Our Lady of Bethany. The priory was built in 1924 and is still used as a convent today.
An abbey full of books
Then you'll cycle past Tillegem Castle, Beisbroek Castle, and the Abbey Church of St. Peter's Abbey in Steenbrugge. The abbey is primarily known for its extensive library. Your tour ends back on the outskirts of Bruges.
On the road in Bruges
The last part of the route runs right through Bruges. Take a moment here to get off your bike and stroll around the charming city center for a bit longer. Bruges' historic city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which clearly shows there's plenty to see in Bruges. Don't miss it.
