Description
Castle splendor in greenery
The starting point of this route is on the outskirts of Bruges. From here you cycle into the woods in the territory of Sint-Andries, Sint-Michiels, Zedelgem and Jabbeke. These forests form the largest green lung around Bruges and they are not called 'castle forests' for nothing. You will find one castle after another among the greenery. Nieuwburgh Castle is the first castle where you can take a look on the route. This castle originated from a dairy that was started here in 1892. Then you cycle past Loppem Castle with the surrounding Loppem Castle Park and Maze and the Priory of Our Lady of Bethany. The priory was built in 1924 and today it is still used as a women's monastery.
An abbey full of books
Then you cycle further past Tillegem Castle, Beisbroek Castle and the Abbey Church of Sint-Pietersabdij Steenbrugge. The abbey is mainly known for its extensive library. You end your trip back on the outskirts of Bruges.
On the road in Bruges
The last part of the route runs straight through Bruges. Take some time here to get off your bike and stroll around the pleasant city center for a while. The historic city center of Bruges is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which shows that there is plenty to see in Bruges. You shouldn't miss that.
