Discover the chapels of Hechtel-Eksel

This route takes you through one of the greenest municipalities in Flanders: Hechtel-Eksel. Together with the municipality of Overpelt and the city of Lommel, this municipality forms the'Bosland\\\', the largest and most child-friendly forest in Flanders.

Hechtel
The center of Hechtel was almost completely wiped off the map during the Second World War. Almost unthinkable if you cycle through it now. The center also houses the Korhaan liqueur distillery, the oldest in Belgium. Traditional liqueur, gin and eggnog have been made here since 1833. You will also discover the Village Chapel and the chapel of the Lost End.

Eksel
Eksel is known as Teutendorp. A Teut was a traveling trader who spent an average of 9 months a year away from home to sell his goods. They moved to the Netherlands, Germany or even further to trade. Along the route you will find some stately Teuten homes that testify to the prosperity that the Teuten brought to the village. The history of some chapels in Eksel can also be linked to these Teuten families.
