Chapel or cross

De kapel van het Hoksent

This chapel is the oldest chapel in Eksel and it may have been founded in the period of the Christianization of the Kempen (8th century). Although the chapel is dedicated to Our Lady of Seven Woe? N, it is known as a pilgrimage site of Saint Anthony Abbot, who mainly came to call against livestock diseases. The current building is said to date from the 2nd half of the 16th century. The bell in the small bell tower dates from 1562. The anchor on the south façade with the year 1781 indicates a year of repair. Until around 1830, the chapel was managed by chapel masters, independent of the parish church. The old place of worship is in the shade of 8 old lime trees, according to the old folk belief the lime was a sacred tree. Chapel and surroundings are protected.
