Discover the chapels of Hechtel-Eksel

This route takes you through one of the greenest municipalities in Flanders: Hechtel-Eksel. Together with the municipality of Overpelt and the city of Lommel, this municipality forms the'Bosland\\\', the largest and most child-friendly forest in Flanders.

Hechtel
The center of Hechtel was almost completely wiped off the map during World War II. Almost unthinkable when you cycle through it now. The Korhaan liqueur distillery, the oldest in Belgium, is also located in the center. Since 1833, people have been making traditional liqueur, jenever and lawyer here. You will also discover the Village Chapel and the chapel of the Lost End.

Eksel
Eksel is known as a Teutendorp. A Teut was a traveling trader who was away from home for an average of 9 months a year to sell his goods. They went to the Netherlands, Germany or even further to trade. Along the route you will find a few stately Teuten homes that testify to the prosperity that the Teuten brought to the village. The history of some chapels in Eksel can also be linked to these Teut families.
