Discover the chapels of Hechtel-Eksel

This route takes you through one of the greenest municipalities in Flanders: Hechtel-Eksel. Together with the municipality of Overpelt and the city of Lommel, this municipality forms the'Bosland\\\', the largest and most child-friendly forest in Flanders.

Relax during a relaxing bike ride between the vast nature or discover the rich history of this cozy municipality, with some hidden chapels and other heritage gems as the icing on the cake. Along the way you will regularly see a terrace where you can enjoy a coffee with pie or a delicious meal.

The centre of Hechtel was almost completely wiped off the map during the Second World War. Almost unthinkable when you cycle through it now. The centre is also home to the Korhaan distillery, the oldest in Belgium. Since 1833, they have been making artisanal liqueur, jenever and advocaat here. You can also discover the Dorpskapel and the chapel of the Verloren Eind.

Axel
Eksel is known as a Teutendorp. A Teut was a traveling trader who was away from home for an average of 9 months a year to sell his goods. They traveled to the Netherlands, Germany or even further to trade. Along the route you will find several stately Teuten houses that bear witness to the prosperity that the Teuten brought to the village. The history of several chapels in Eksel can also be linked to these Teuten families.
