Description

Have you always wondered why Groningen has such a rich history of breweries and distilleries and why the people of Groningen like a drink? You will find out all about it on this interesting cycling route through beautiful Groningen.

The success and presence of breweries and distilleries in Groningen have historical roots that go back to the Middle Ages and are rooted in the geographical and economic characteristics of the city and the region. First of all, Groningen is a Hanseatic city, a medieval trading alliance. This position brought a constant flow of travelers, traders and merchants to the city. Because of this, there was always a high demand for drinks such as beer and gin, which were not only produced for local consumption but also for trade with other cities and regions.

In addition, Groningen is located on several important waterways, including the Hunze River and the Hoornsemeer. These waterways were vital for transporting raw materials such as grain and malt, as well as distributing the finished products to other locations. This made it easier for breweries and distilleries in the city to produce and distribute their wares.

The founding of the University of Groningen in 1614 brought an increasing number of students to the city. These students created an additional demand for beer and other beverages. Many cafes and taprooms were established near the university to meet this increasing demand, which also contributed to the flourishing drinking culture.

All these factors together have contributed to the above-average success and presence of breweries and distilleries in Groningen. The rich history and cultural appreciation for these craft traditions have ensured that they can flourish in this pleasant city to this day. For example, the Groningen family business Hooghoudt has been active in distilling jenever since 1880. Hero Jan and Grietje Hooghoudt, who started this company at the time, were already known as pioneers in experimenting with flavours. The distillery is still in full operation, but unfortunately no longer accessible to passers-by. You will, however, come across their name in neon letters during your visit to this city.

You can also find a wide range of large and smaller breweries in Groningen today. We selected a number of them where you can experience something of the brewing process. Each one is an interesting stop where you can also end your cycle route with a tasting!
