Agriculture and horticulture are very important in the Hoogstraten area, especially strawberry cultivation. In Hoogstraten, more than 25 million kilos of strawberries are grown every year. Take a bike ride between the strawberry fields and the greenhouses with strawberries and explore the beautiful Mark Valley in the meantime.
From Hoogstraten to Meersel-Dreef
The start and end point of this route is in the center of Hoogstraten. Here you can take a look at St. Catherine's Church, one of the tallest brick buildings in Europe, or at the Beguinage, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. From here you cycle to the village of Meersel-Dreef. This is the northernmost town in all of Belgium. If you are ready for a break, you can relax here on a terrace with an'Erbizzem\\\', a strawberry beer.
Strawberries from the vending machine
Then you cycle back to Hoogstraten via Meer. Along the way you cycle along the winding river De Mark in the Mark Valley. A little further on, this stream becomes a wide river that eventually flows into Breda. Do you get a craving for strawberries from all the strawberry fields and greenhouses with strawberries that you pass by? Then get some strawberries from a vending machine along the road. Then you can taste the so-called 'Hoogstraatse queens' during or after your trip.
City with taste Hoogstraten profiles itself as the'town with taste\\\'. If you are ready for a snack and drink after your bike ride, you have come to the right place. Hoogstraat hospitality, gastronomy and a touch of culinary mastery come together here and that means above all:
delicious dishes to die for. Find a nice catering establishment in Hoogstraten and be pampered with all kinds of delicacies with strawberries in them, of course.
