Description

...with soldiers and fortress builders
The street plan of Doesburg is still an imprint from the Middle Ages. Anton Pieck could have invented it. What particularly attracts attention are the colored facades. Many buildings are remarkably fresh and colorful! After the city joined the Hanseatic League in the 15th century, prosperity increased rapidly. Doesburg grew from a small settlement into a city with imposing buildings and elegant merchant houses.

Fortified city
Doesburg is located where the Old and New IJssel rivers flow together. A favorable location for trade, but also an important location from a military and strategic point of view. During the Eighty Years' War and the French occupation, Doesburg changed from a trading town into a garrison town. This hindered her further development. At the end of the 17th century, Menno van Coehoorn was commissioned to make Doesburg into a strong border fortress. It took no less than 30 years to implement his plans. They proceeded so energetically that the city remained trapped by its own walls until 1923.

The Wage
Traders had to pay taxes to the city on the trade that took place in Doesburg in the 15th century. That was based on weight. For example, in 1478 the Waag was put into use to promote fair trade. Market vendors were obliged to have their products weighed in the Waag. The tenant of the property also had a monopoly on the sale of foreign beers in the city. In addition to the weighing house, this Waag also served as a Stadsbierhuys.
