In March 1945, Allied troops crossed the Rhine at five locations in Germany. Only then did they invade the Eastern and Northern Netherlands. Allied supremacy was great, but fanatical Germans held out for a long time in Doesburg. Just before their withdrawal, they blew up some important monuments, such as the Martini Tower.
