Walking tour on the Trappist path

The walk starts at the Abbey of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Westmalle. The current monastery buildings have been inhabited by monks of the Cistercian order since 1902. It is not possible to visit the monastery, because the monks prefer to lead a quiet and secluded life. You can admire the monastery from the outside and it is also possible to buy artisanal cheese or attend the midday prayer. Near the abbey you will find the Saint Bernard Chapel from 1947.

Then you walk for miles through the quiet Kempen forests. About halfway along the route you will come to the pilgrimage site of Drieboomkensberg. In 1750 a chapel was built here in honour of Our Lady, but around 1800 the chapel was destroyed by a storm. At the end of the route you will pass the Brewery of the Trappists of Westmalle where the Trappist beer of Westmalle has been brewed for decades. The brewery is not open to the public, but in the area there are enough places where you can taste a pint to end the walk well.
