Walking tour on the Trappist path

The walk starts at Abbey of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Westmalle. The current monastery buildings have been inhabited since 1902 by monks of the order of the Cistercians. It is not possible to visit the monastery as the monks like to lead a quiet and secluded life. You can admire the monastery from the outside and it is also possible to buy artisan cheese or attend the afternoon prayer. Near the abbey you will find the Sint-Bernardus chapel from 1947.

Drieboomkensberg

You then walk for miles through the quiet Kempen woods. About halfway through the route you will reach the pilgrimage site of Drieboomkensberg. In 1750 a chapel was built here in honor of Our Lady, but around 1800 that chapel was destroyed by a storm. At the end of the route you will pass the Westmalle Trappist Brewery where Westmalle Trappist beer has been brewed for decades. The brewery is not open to the public, but there are plenty of places in the area where you can taste a pint to end the walk well.
