Chapel or cross
Sint-Bernarduskapel
During the Second World War, the residents of Westmalle were regularly startled at night by overcoming planes. These were planes from the British, who were on their way to Germany to bomb targets there or just returned from there. In the vicinity of the chapel, two English Lancaster bombers were shot down by the Germans during this time. The English crew members were killed. The chapel was founded in 1947 on the initiative of the Trappist fathers in memory of these crew members. This chapel also serves as a veneration of their patron Saint Bernard because the abbey had survived the war unscathed. The chapel was built in a sober neo-Romanesque style under the direction of master builder Reyntjes. On August 20, 1947 it was inaugurated by Dom Robertus Eyckmans. The chapel is right in front of Café? Trappists, a short distance from the dirt road. Few walkers make the effort to visit this chapel, but it is well worth a look.
