Description

Take a trip along the Beemster World Heritage Site and discover the beauty and poetry of straight lines. Four centuries ago, new land was laid out here according to the measurement of the Golden Ratio, a geometric ideal that can be seen everywhere here.

Country residences of wealthy merchants
This route takes you through the Beemster with its many historic forts and windmills. How about, for example, the Fort on the Middenweg, the Fort at Spijkerboor and Molen de Nachtegaal. About four centuries ago you also found beautiful country houses here where wealthy merchants from Amsterdam made quite a living. They had these country houses built here to escape the city during the summer months and enjoy everything the country had to offer. Very little of these pleasure gardens has been preserved, but you will still find old farmhouses that were built for land supervisors. These farms were often decorated with facades like the canal paths in Amsterdam.

The Island Polder
You also cycle through the Eilandspolder, a wetland peat meadow area where it is swarming with birds in the summer. They cheerfully chatter to you when you cycle through this area. At the end of the route you can settle down at Brasa Bar and Kitchen for a nice snack and a drink.

Regional products from the Beemster
The Beemster is nowadays known for its delicious cheeses, apples, pears, grapes, vegetables and meat. Many of these treats are offered in roadside stalls or farm shops. Furthermore, you can of course also taste delicious local products in the many restaurants that cook at a high level. Along the way you will see the meadows where all that beauty grows, full of Dutch cows and with picturesque villages such as Grootschermer and De Rijp on the horizon.
