Edam-Volendam, North Holland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 137678

Today you drive through the Waterland region. The low-lying peat meadow area is protected against the intrusive water by the Waterlandse Zeedijk. Quays were built as early as the twelfth century, but Waterland always remained marshy, so farmers focused mainly on livestock farming. Due to the production of dairy and the lack of its own grain stock, a healthy trade was created in Edam, Monnickendam and Purmerend. The authenticity of Volendam and all the fame that the village has gained, make this cycling route a trip you will not soon forget! One of the best preserved fortresses from the Defense Line of Amsterdam is the Fort near Edam. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
