Cycle along the banks of the Markermeer, which is 700 square kilometers in size and is located between North Holland, Flevoland and the IJsselmeer. The original plan was to reclaim the Markermeer, just like Flevoland, but because it is an important attraction for birds, that plan met with a lot of resistance. Water recreation was therefore extra stimulated and the Markermeer attracts many water (sports) enthusiasts. You can also enjoy the impressive view that the Krabbersplaat wind turbines offer you; they rise from the water and dominate the horizon. There is always something to see around the Markermeer! Enkhuizen is located on both the Markermeer and the IJsselmeer. It is a municipality that consists largely of water; of the 116 square kilometers, more than 103 square kilometers is water. In addition, the environment is given color by flourishing flower bulb cultivation. The town is known as the 'Herring City' because of its past as a center for herring fishing in the Middle Ages and the town has grown into an important tourist center with marinas, Fairytale Wonderland and the Zuiderzee Museum. Part of the town is a protected cityscape. In this way, the sixteenth-century walls and the historic canals are well preserved. During your bike ride you will pass the Ceres mill. The octagonal tower mill was built in 1849. He replaced the De Oude Haas post mill. The mill was originally called that, until agricultural cooperative Ceres acquired the mill in 1908. Then the mill was renamed. Until 1968 the mill regularly ground grain, but when the mill was running after that it no longer produced animal feed. When the mill fell into disrepair, a foundation was set up, which had large-scale restoration work carried out in 1992. The restoration took six years and since 1998 the mill has been grinding grain again on a voluntary basis.
