Description

Seven hundred hectares of sloping, loamy sandy soils and peat-rich soil, covered with heather plants. This can only concern the largest heathland in Flanders: the Mechelse Heide. There used to be a primeval forest here, which was decimated by the felling and grazing of the area. What remained was a heathland, which is well maintained. Young trees are cut down and the humus-rich soil layers are soded, so that new heather plants have room to grow. The typical heathland environment was created by felling primeval forest and grazing the land. If nature were allowed to take its course, forests would soon take over the heathland. In order to preserve the heathland, we must therefore conduct consistent nature management. For example, we cut down the young trees in the heathland, scrape off the top humus-rich soil layers (\\\'sod\\\') and mow pieces of heathland every seven to ten years to give space to new heathland plants. The heath that gives this nature reserve its name will continue to exist. In the summer, heather turns a beautiful purple due to the typical heather vegetation, but the red cap heather, which is rare in Belgium, is also common here. Broom bushes grow between the heather plants, in addition, tall shrubs and trees grow here and there. The quaking poplar, sporkehout and sessile oak are some species you may encounter. Tree pipit, stonechat and nightjar build their nests high in the trees and lizards scurry under the foliage. Among the truly rare and striking species are the smooth snake and the saddle locust, but of course there are also the typical inhabitants of moorland areas: ants and sandpit beetles slog their way through the sandy soil, which rabbits happily hop over.
