This route is one of the 42 stages of the Jacob van Lennep experience tour. A tour inspired by the journey that Van Lennep made through the Netherlands with his fellow student Van Hogendorp in 1823. Click here for an overview of all stages. Views
Thursday August 7. From Lent, Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp take a walk through the hills of the Rijk van Nijmegen. In Beek they kill time by drinking coffee, because it is raining heavily again. In the nineteenth century it was wetter and on average a few degrees colder than now. Between showers, travelers climb muddy paths to a hilltop to enjoy the views.
Valkhof
The Valkhof in Nijmegen cannot appeal to Van Lennep. Perhaps because he bumps into a lady,"(...) the beautiful Miss Toelaer, who did not want to recognize me\\\". A new day brings new opportunities. When they drive on in a carriage to avoid "the miserable heath", a beautiful young woman travels with them. Van Lennep has entertaining conversations with her. After an hour they leave Gelderland, which (unlike the previous provinces) does not receive an extensive character sketch, but has to make do with "delicious".
Letters
Van Lennep's diary ends at the border with North Brabant. He still writes about his journey, but in letters to his sister Antje. In it he speaks highly of Grave's fortifications, especially the Hampoort. A little further on, Van Lennep says that he climbs into a window that closes behind him:"Six windows broke, and I got away with 24 stuivers.\\\" He does not provide any more details. Although it doesn't take much imagination to imagine why a womanizer would climb through a window...
St. John's Cathedral
In Den Bosch the travelers meet, among others, Van Hogendorp's brother, who is a second lieutenant in the Horse Artillery. They also view the Roman Catholic St. John's Cathedral. Nowadays this monument enjoys great prestige, but the Protestant Van Lennep has nothing positive to say about it.
