Jacob van Lennep route, Part 21 (Dalfsen - Hardenberg)

From Dedem
On Tuesday 15 July, Van Lennep and van Hogendorp want to pay a visit to Baron Van Dedem: the man who had the Dedemsvaart dug and was responsible for the reclamations in this region. However, he cannot be found on his beautiful estate Rollecate. The country house was replaced by a road in 1931.

Abuses
The travelers arrive in Ommerschans the same day. Van Lennep describes in detail the abuses that prevail there. For example, many settlers are not here voluntarily as in Frederiksoord , but have been flatly deported. Among them a large number of children who'just\\\' have to work. A harrowing story. Van Lennep and his traveling companion are moved to tears. Geert Mak is also emotional when he discusses the abuses in the sixth TV episode and visits the pauper graves on Balkerweg.

Swollen foot
The route takes you through Dedemsvaart, the reclamation village that was founded on the Dedemsvaart. At the end of the day it turns out that Van Hogendorp's left foot is so swollen that he cannot put on a shoe. Walking is not an option. The travelers are given a lift by carriage to Hardenberg, where Van Hogendorp has his foot bandaged by a physician"(...) who was as thick as six people put together, and who was also notary and sheriff\\\ ".

Just before Rheeze you cross the Overijsselse Vecht via an electric self-service ferry. This ferry operates every day from April to October. Outside this period you can drive from junction 57 via junction 58 to junction 64.
