Bedelaarskolonie Ommerschans
The Ommerschans fortress was built around 1625 to defend the road in the inaccessible swamp against the Spanish troops. In 1670, the soldiers ran away when they saw the army of Bernhard van Galen, also known as Bommen Berend, approaching. During the eighteenth century the fort was mainly used as ammunition storage. In the nineteenth century, the former fortress served as a beggar's colony and fell into disrepair. Now only part of the moat and a cemetery remains.
