For centuries people have made use of the power of the water in the rainy Bergisches Land. More than a thousand mills once stood between the Wupper and the Sieg. In the municipality of Kürten alone you can still find the remains of 30 locations of mills. In some, grain was ground, in others bones of animals were ground with the help of water power into fertilizer or even made highly explosive gunpowder. Sawmills and metal processing companies used to be powered by waterwheels from streams and rivers.
The Kürtener Mühlenweg accompanies hikers on the 13.5-kilometre circular route to the traces of ten historic mill sites. You will learn exciting things about the history of the mills, but you can also discover historic mill buildings. Some have been largely preserved according to the original, others can only be found by name in historic restaurants or small villages. The functioning of the different types of mills are explained on detailed information boards along the edge of the road as well as with anecdotes and sayings, whereby the Bergisch mill history is still very vivid today.
