Description

Go out in the Purmerend area and discover the historical gems hidden in the landscape here. You cycle past three forts that were previously used to protect the area against the enemy, but also past all kinds of other sights.

Along the water
This route starts on the edge of Purmerend. Cycle along the elongated meadows of the Oostzanerveld to beautiful Monnickendam. As soon as you enter the town, you will be enchanted by monumental houses on attractive streets and canals. You then drive along the edge of the Markermeer, the former Zuiderzee, to Katwoude and on to Volendam and Edam. You will pass the Katwoudermolen and the Zuidpoldermolen, both of which drain polders in the area. Just outside Edam you pass the first fort on this route: Fort at Edam. This is the most northeastern point of the Defense Line of Amsterdam, a defense line of 135 kilometers around Amsterdam.

Admire forts
Through the center of Edam and Kwadijk you set course back to the edge of Purmerend. Along the way you can take a look at parts of the Fort bij Kwadijk and Fort Benoorden Purmerend. The Fort at Kwadijk was never completed, but you can view the Engineer shed and the fort keeper's house here.

Looking around Edam
In Edam you can also take a look at the Edam Museum, among others. This is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. You can learn more about Edam's rich history here. Furthermore, the Edam Town Hall is also worth admiring. So take a good look around you when you cycle through Edam.

Please note: check the website of the forts in this area to see in advance when they are open to visitors.
