Description
Back to the past in Oostzaan
The starting point of this route is in Oostzaan. Many Oostzaners used to work here on the bleaching fields, in tear mills and in starch factories. They also export for shipping and whaling. Oostzaan even knew a notorious pirate: Claes Compaen. Other well-known residents of Oostzaan were artist Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsaenen and Albert Heijn, who established his first store in Oostzaan. In the village center you can take a look at the Oostzaan Church, the Kunst Greep theater and a pleasant square surrounded by catering establishments.
The Oostzanerveld and the Twiske
From Oostzaan you cycle past the unique peat meadow area of the Oostzanerveld, a centuries-old area with a special plot structure and wide openness. You will also cycle through the Twiske recreational area, where you can enjoy the peace and space. You can also swim, dive, boat, surf and sail here.
The Twiskepolder
You might not think it when you cycle through nature here, but the Twiskepolder was built by man. In the 1960s, a lot of sand was excavated here for the construction of the first Coentunnel, creating the deep Stootersplas. Look carefully around this area, because all kinds of birds live here. You can also admire numerous sights on this route.
Height Profile
In Laag Holland are the rustic villages of yesteryear. While cycling you will find Dutch history in the beautiful straight polder lines and the protected city and village views. Low Holland is a national landscape. The Defense Line of Amsterdam and the Beemster have been placed on the World Heritage list by UNESCO.
