Gelderland 18 | The Maas as a front line: Heumen – Appeltern

The route follows the northern bank of the Maas between Heumen and Appeltern and largely runs over narrow, high dikes that provide a beautiful view of the river and the lowlands beyond. Brabant area is now on the other side of the river, but that was not always the case in the past. The fortified town of Grave belonged alternately to the dukes of Brabant and the dukes of Gelre.
