Gemaal Van Citters I

As early as 1300, the inhabitants of the Maas area tried to keep floods under control, for example by constructing the Niftrikse wetering with a lock on the Maas. Still, the flood hazard persisted for many years. In 1926 it was decided that pumping stations would be built in the Niftrik polder. During the construction of the Gemaal Van Citters I, there was a flood disaster. Besides Niftrik, villages such as Nederasselt, Overasselt and Balgoy were also flooded. Due to climate change, the danger from the water is far from over. The pumping station is named after Schelto Citters (1865-1942), then Queen's Commissioner in Gelderland. The Gemaal van Citters II is located near the Balgoyse wetering.
