Description

The Wekeromse Zand is an area between Lunteren and Wekerom with active shifting sands. Active drifting sand no longer occurs outside the Netherlands in Northwest Europe, so this landscape is certainly special. This route takes you along this shifting sand area and the surrounding moors that are bursting with historical traces.

Celtic Fields
The history of the Wekeromse Zand goes back a long time. This area was already inhabited in the Iron Age. Nowadays you will find the largest Celtic Fields complex in the Netherlands. Celtic Fields are prehistoric fields that consist of small-scale fields and are surrounded by ramparts. This agricultural system was used throughout Northwestern Europe. An unprecedented number of contiguous Celtic Fields have been preserved in this area. An Iron Age farm with a storehouse and a Celtic Field has been reconstructed on one of the fields. So here you can get acquainted with what life was like in prehistoric times.

Germanic well
A little further on you can take a look at an old Germanic well. This pit several meters deep was used in the Iron Age by Germanic farmers from the area. At the time, hollow tree trunks were placed in these pits to make it easier to raise water. This well dates from about 300 BC.

Veluwe villages
In the vicinity of the start and end point of this route you will find the villages of Lunteren and Wekerom. These villages on the edge of the Veluwe are the perfect place to take a look after your trip. Settle down here on a terrace for a snack and a drink and take a break from all that walking.
