Description

This route is a loop that you can follow after you have taken a beautiful bike ride through 'the Kempen Lake District' around Dessel. This way you can further explore this beautiful area full of water ponds and sandy beaches. The landscape in this region was created by the extraction of the Mole quartz sand. In the 19th century it was discovered that this sand is of exceptional quality. Some of these extraction sites grew into recreational areas and other places grew into beautiful nature reserves.

Climb the Sas4 tower
The starting point of this route is on the edge of the Zilvermeer. From here you cycle past the Sas4 tower in the direction of Dessel. The Bocholt-Herentals and Schoten-Kwaadmechelen canals cross near this tower. Climb this 37-meter observation tower and enjoy the view over these canals and the Kempen Lakes. In clear weather you can see for miles. In the visitor center at the bottom of the tower you can learn more about the nature in the area surrounding this tower, shipping and quartz sand extraction.

An ancient castle
Then you cycle on to Broqueville Castle. This castle was built between 1857 and 1861 according to a design by Baron Stanislas de Broqueville. In 1921 the castle was expanded with two crenellated south towers. The castle is still inhabited today. You then cycle past the Quartz Sand Quarry back to the starting point of the route. Another highlight on this cycle route is the centuries-old Premonstratensian abbey of Postel.
